Charco del Viento - Natural swimming fun among the rocksCharco del Viento is one of the most popular swimming bays with the locals in the north of Tenerife and there is a good reason for this: here there are three natural rock pools each offering different swimming conditions. Furthermore, the waves also create several “whirlpools” in which you are splashed about by the surf. In many places the waves crash against the rocks and give the bathers a good shower. Charco del Viento is rather like a water-park, but one which has been created by nature.
The steps down from the car park are wide and well maintained and at the edge there is a small, beautifully landscaped garden. Once you reach the bottom, a sturdy path to the right leads to the main pool. To the left there are further steps down to the "paddling pool”. This area is the best sheltered from the waves and the only place where there is a small sandy beach. The pool to the right should be accessed with care, as the rocks can be sharp and slippery. Once you are in the water you find yourself in a natural wave pool in which the water sometimes comes splashing down from above when the waves crash against the rocks. Swimming here is not completely safe in spite of the natural protection of the rocks and even though the currents do not suck you out into the open sea. However, they can be strong enough to knock you over and cause injury through falling onto the rocks. If you are a confident swimmer and not afraid of the water which can crash down from all sides, then this pool can be great fun. Divers also use the easy access to the paddling pool to explore the beauty of the rock formations underwater.
The nature here is breath-taking and you can also experience one of the most beautiful sunsets in the whole of Tenerife. Anglers are also happy to take the arduous route over the rocks to the left and right of the beach to enjoy the view high above sea-level and maybe make a good catch.
