Playa del Socorro - Excellent surfing conditions at this black sandy beach
Playa del Socorro is situated in the south-west of Tenerife about 15 minutes away from Puerto de la Cruz. The appearance of the beach changes frequently. It is actually one of the few sandy beaches in the north of Tenerife, but because of the currents the sea regularly washes pebbles and stones ashore. However these are removed at regular intervals so that the beach remains predominantly sandy.
The fine, black sand shimmers in the sun. In the background there is a tall, partly vegetated cliff which protects from the wind and provides shade. Joggers on their early morning run can be spotted on the empty beach. There is also exercise equipment at the promenade which can also be used for a workout. The fresh wind and the crashing of the waves create a lively atmosphere for this open-air fitness studio.
Playa del Socorro is above all a hot spot for surfers. It is frequented daily by numerous surfers and surf schools who take advantage of the excellent surfing conditions. Surfing competitions take place here regularly because of the consistent frequency of the waves. There are three surf schools where you can take courses and hire surfboards. Experienced surfers come here in the winter months to enjoy the “swell” which is stronger then. However, swimming then is not to be recommended, as the currents are especially strong. In summer the waves are smaller and suitable for beginners, as well as for advanced surfers and Playa del Socorro is then enjoyable both for relaxation and swimming.
