Praia Grande Poente beach strikes a happy medium between the two beaches on either side. Whereas the town beach at Armação de Pêra is livelier, Praia Grande on the other side offers greater tranquillity and a more natural setting. In between the two, Praia Grande Poente gives you a beautiful, peaceful, unspoiled sandy beach with a good infrastructure, and both relaxation and excitement for young and old.
Praia Grande Poente - Family-friendly natural beach in front of sand dunes
At the edge of the town of Armação de Pêra is the beach of Praia Grande Poente, stretching towards the south-east. The town beach at Armação de Pêra is bordered by the Ribeira de Alcantarinha as it flows into the sea. If you want to keep your feet dry, or if you are heading for Praia Poente, then instead of starting from here you should follow signs to Praia Grande, the adjacent beach on the other side. There is no clear-cut border between the two.
As you come from the car park via the long boardwalk the first thing you'll see is a beach bar. Here there are toilets and showers and a lovely terrace with a view of the beach. Then there is a ramp leading down onto the well-kept beach surface of fine, light sand. Praia Grande Poente has access for wheelchair users; it also has a blue flag, the symbol for exceptionally clean and visitor-friendly beaches.
The boardwalk continues to left and right across the sand, past two areas where you can rent loungers and sun umbrellas. At the right-hand end you will find a pavilion offering massages. Further on is the river mouth, where the warm shallow water is a great place for children and adults alike to enjoy bathing and splashing around.
At the left-hand edge, beyond the swimmers' area supervised by lifeguards, is the start of the water sports zone. Here there is a water sports operator with a friendly team who can rent you jet skis, canoes and pedal boats.
The bathing conditions on Praia Grande Poente beach are good and, in comparison with the adjacent town beach of Armação de Pêra, it is much quieter. It’s especially popular with families with children. But the combination of natural beauty, a good sound infrastructure and a friendly atmosphere brings a smile to the faces of other beach-lovers as well.
