Set in the old fishing village of Burgau you will find a large but intimate sandy beach that lies below a rocky hillside in front of the town's white cottages. The calm Atlantic and gently sloping sand in the bay, along with the infrastructure in the town that lies behind it, make Praia do Burgau particularly attractive for families. It's also worth visiting to sample fresh fish dishes in one of the restaurants.
Praia do Burgau - Family-friendly ambience and convivial restaurants
The cheerfully coloured fishing boats rest on the light sand awaiting their next fishing expedition. In the kitchens of the nearby restaurants, the freshly prepared fish is plated up for hungry tourists, who come not only to enjoy the typical regional cuisine, but also to sit on the terrace letting their gaze sweep across the bay that lies in front of the small town of Burgau.
Burgau has retained the charm of an old, authentic fishing village to this day, even though the town has long made its living from tourism. The small houses, with their whitewashed façades, spread down the steep hillside and border right onto the large area of soft sand in places. Praia do Burgau is sheltered on both sides by high, crumbling rock faces, which shimmer in the sun in tones of light brown and grey.
Praia do Burgau beach spreads along the south-western coast of the Algarve and is situated 12 kilometres from Lagos. If you're staying in the town, you can get to the bay in just a few steps. Above the beach there is also a small car park.
The broad area of sand has enough space for everyone who comes here to relax, soak up the sun and swim. The place is particularly popular with families because the rough ocean doesn't lash against the shore with its full force here. Quite the opposite in fact - there are hardly any waves on this beach and the sand slopes gently into the water. Despite this, there are lifeguards in situ to ensure the safety of bathers. In addition you can hire pedal boats and kayaks from a small hire centre.
There are some very good places to eat too. Right behind the beach you will find a beach bar with a large terrace and lots of dishes on the menu. It also has sun loungers and beach umbrellas. A few other restaurants, cafés and chiringuitos are lined up along the streets, most of which have convivial outside areas.
