Relax and switch off is the motto on the remote island beach of Praia dos Hangares, which extends over one and a half kilometres of fine sand dunes. It's probably the most isolated of the three spacious sandy beaches on the South Portuguese island of Ilha do Farol or Ilha da Culatra, which is part of a unique lagoon landscape to the south of Faro. Here you will find no tourist infrastructure at all, meaning that you can enjoy the tranquillity and seclusion of this natural paradise undisturbed.
Praia dos Hangares - Remote natural beach free from disturbances
To immerse yourself in the idyllic tranquillity of Praia dos Hangares, you must take the ferry from Olhão to Culatra. Once you have parked your vehicle in the town of Olhão in the south of the Algarve, you are less than 45 minutes from Ilha do Farol or Ilha da Culatra.
You won't find many bathers along the fine spacious sands of Praia dos Hangares, which stretch between Praia do Farol and Praia da Culatra. Apart from a lifeguard team there is no infrastructure here and very little tourist activity. Just a few families and older people come to the beach for relaxation and reflection, as well as one or two nude bathers, who feel at home on the wide open spaces here.
The lack of visitors means that Praia dos Hangares is very clean. The deep blue water is crystal clear and sparkles up at you. In the background the soft dune landscape rises gently from the unique and environmentally protected lagoon area around the South Portuguese harbour town of Faro. Local families live in the three settlements on the island. Most of them earn a living from fishing or renting out private accommodation.
