Praia da Luz - Large holiday resort with feel-good atmosphere
It's thanks to this beach's position in the holiday resort of Luz that there is so much going on here in summer. At this time of year, guests at the numerous holiday apartments and hotels flock to the water to relax in the sun and cool off in the sea.
The popular sandy beach, Praia da Luz, is located in the south-western part of the Algarve, just eight kilometres away from Lagos. If you're not staying in the resort itself, you can easily get to the bay by car. Signs marked "Praia" point the way through the maze of streets in the resort. Right next to the beach there is a small car park where you can park for a fee.
The Atlantic shows its more peaceful side on this beach and the soft sand slopes gently into the water. This is why Praia da Luz is particularly popular with families. On the whole, though, the crowd is extremely mixed - lots of young and older couples mingle in the hustle and bustle between the colourful beach umbrellas.
The imposing rock face on the eastern side has a large impact on the scenery. It includes the striking promontory, Rocha Negra, which projects into the sea, and due to its dark, almost black stone, it is the landmark of the beach. In the west the light sand blends into a low, craggy rock plateau. You can spread out your towel here and cool off in the water, and you can also go hunting for marine fossils in the rocks.
A palm-lined promenade runs right behind the beach. There you will find lots of small restaurants and cafés, and occasionally little stands where you can by handcrafted items, jewellery and clothes. In the western part of the beach the promenade leads right past the ruins of an old fort, which you can visit.
With lifeguards keeping an eye on safety, showers and toilets the facilities on this beach leave little to be desired. A water sports operator guarantees action on the water. Here you can hire kayaks or head out for a sofa ride, amongst other things.
