Praia do Farol - A large island beach in the protected lagoon landscape near Faro
Praia do Farol is situated on Ilha do Farol, also called Ilha da Culatra, not far from the southern Portuguese coastal town of Faro. The ferry from Olhão takes 45 minutes to cross to the low-lying dune island, which is over seven kilometres long and at least a kilometre wide.
The large dune beach, Praia do Farol, on the west of the island, stretches for one and a half kilometres, at which point it merges into the small neighbouring beach, Praia dos Hangares. Praia do Farol belongs to the western settlement of Farol, with its attractive and eye-catching lighthouse dating from 1851.
At Praia do Farol you will find lots of Portuguese holidaymakers who appreciate the crystal clear water and the idyllic tranquil atmosphere of the beach. In the summer months you can rent bungalows and private apartments. In the three settlements on the island you will find a number of restaurants and bars, and right by the jetty at Farol there is also a small supermarket.
At the western end of the fine-sanded beach of Praia do Farol there are two beach bars, both with a tasteful and friendly ambience that adds a touch of magic to this idyllic island paradise. Maramais Bar da Praia serves an indulgent mix of fresh cocktails, smoothies and snacks to the accompaniment of relaxed music. The further east you go, the more peaceful and secluded your surroundings become. Naturists are welcome in the remoter parts of the beach, and in the mornings and evenings it's fine to bring your dog here.
