Praia do Alvor - A spacious dune beach for all-round family holidays
Praia do Alvor is a long, wide sandy beach on the southern Algarve coast. It stretches out over approximately three kilometres and is part of the town of Alvor. This historic settlement is located between the towns of Portimão and Lagos on the mouth of the Rio de Alvor. The wetlands that have formed here are home to numerous species of waterfowl, small reptiles and insects.
Fine sand, cool water and a strong breeze are features of the spacious beach of Praia do Alvor. These conditions are what make the beach a top spot for kitesurfers and windsurfers, especially in the afternoon. Four shipwrecks lying in the seabed also attract the odd diver or two. On top of this you'll find a wide range of water sports activities on offer in the middle of the wide dune beach. Several operators await with jet skis, canoes, stand up paddle boards, pedal boats and much more.
If you've built up an appetite there are numerous places to eat. Restaurants with varying prices are situated a little distance away behind the dunes. In peak season lots of holidaymakers from Portugal, Great Britain and Germany come here. Very popular with families, the beach gets quite crowded especially in August.
To protect the delicate ecosystem an extensive network of wooden walkways has been built here to enable you to cross the dunes. The nature lovers among you can follow the circular trails that can be found in this unique natural landscape, with their several viewing points.
The further east or west you head on Praia do Alvor, the emptier the beach gets. You're sure to find a peaceful spot here where you can enjoy the seclusion of the natural, unspoiled dune landscape.
