Several factors come together here to make Praia da Salema a potential dream beach. You will find a large area of fine sand, crystal-clear, deep blue water with good bathing conditions, huge rock faces in the background, good sound infrastructure, and a romantic fishing village with restaurants and boats by the beach here. The place is not excessively crowded and for divers there are even shipwrecks just off the coast. If it didn't already exist, you would think that Praia da Salema on the south coast of the Algarve was simply a figment of your imagination!
Praia da Salema - Dreamy sandy beach on a rocky coastline in a romantic fishing village
The beach of Praia da Salema is situated in the south-west of Portugal by the picturesque fishing village of Salema, to which the beach owes its name. Even today small fishing boats put out to sea from here, bringing in fresh fish daily to the surrounding restaurants.
The broad sandy beach is about a kilometre long. Towards the edges, very rugged, steep rock faces tower up, surrounding the back of it. In the middle section the sandy area is directly adjacent to the road with the car park, and the white houses of the fishing village, which are level with it here and then spread up the hill to the left and right. There are also several restaurants, where you can fortify yourselves with the catch of the day or refresh yourselves with a cold drink.
In addition, here in the central area you will find two zones with a large number of sun loungers and beach umbrellas. As well as these there are double loungers, like four-poster beds, with light curtains, which provide more comfort and a bit of privacy. Since Praia da Salema beach is as popular with locals as it is with holidaymakers, the loungers can be in short supply at peak periods. However, you'll always find more than enough space to spread out your towels on this spacious beach, which is also a favourite with beach joggers.
The water is extremely blue, clear and clean and it's fun just to look at it. The bathing conditions are also very good. The beach slopes gently into the water and the swell is weak in summer. On one section of the beach, marked out by signs, lifeguards keep an eye on safety in the water. Praia da Salema beach bears the blue flag, a seal of quality, safety and environmental-friendliness for beaches. For sun-worshippers looking for relaxation and for bathing enthusiasts it's simply dreamy here.
Divers will also find a particular attraction at Praia da Salema beach - there are two shipwrecks off shore that you can explore under water. When the wind conditions are good, kitesurfers and windsurfers come here too. An additional highlight are the dinosaur footprints, which are clearly visible in the rocks. It's best to ask the lifeguards or in one of the restaurants to find out where exactly to look for them.
