Praia do Mareta - Sandy beach backed by rugged cliffs and ideal for swimming
You will find Praia do Mareta beach on the Algarve, almost at the south-western tip of Portugal. At over 750 metres long, it is the largest beach near the town of Sagres. The south-facing bay is well sheltered and is especially popular with families. Even when the neighbouring beaches in the area are affected by strong winds, bathing in the shallow water here is usually safe and pleasant.
This well-maintained beach of fine sand is set in the rocky landscape so typical of the Algarve. It is almost completely enclosed by high cliffs, and it's only in the middle, where the access to the beach is to be found, that the rock face behind the beautiful light-coloured sand drops away. The beach surface provides plenty of room, so that even in the height of summer, when there are lots of visitors, this popular beach never gets really crowded. However, there is sometimes a shortage of rented beach loungers and sun umbrellas.
There is certainly nothing to prevent you enjoying a swim, but Praia do Mareta beach also has water sports on offer. You can rent a pedal boat, go for a ride on a banana boat or set off on a canoe trip. There is surfing here too, especially in the winter months. You won't go hungry, as the bay has several restaurants on the sea front and just behind it. You can choose between sophisticated fish restaurants and beach bars run with a great deal of care and attention.
