Praia do Ancão - A somewhat remote sandy beach with sophisticated facilities and an exclusive atmosphere
To get to Praia do Ancão you need to allow for a fairly long journey by car or boat. It's about 30 minutes' drive to the beach from Faro. To get to the beach you can walk along wooden boardwalks, which have been built to protect the delicate sand dune landscape. The soft, light sand on Praia do Ancão extends over a length of around two kilometres. The water is refreshing and crystal-clear, and the wind is usually relatively light in peak season.
There are various exclusive lounging areas on the exceptionally clean and well-kept beach of Praia do Ancão. Deluxe sun beds provide plenty of space to relax and some even have blinds for yet more privacy.
The crowd on the beach is mixed. Singles, couples and families alike come here to spend the day relaxing and bathing. There are several exclusive restaurants on the beach. "11 na Praia" serves tapas, fresh fish and seafood, salads and snacks in a stylish ambience. From Friday to Sunday there's even live music here and it has a magnificent view over the sand dunes and the sea to boot. As you'd expect, the exclusive atmosphere and the sophisticated service come with a slightly higher price tag.
During the day you can let off steam trying out the various water sports on offer, which range from banana boating, water skiing, wakeboarding and stand up paddle boarding to kayaking and snorkelling. You can also pass the time playing beach volleyball on Praia do Ancão.
