This is one of the town beaches at Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol in Andalusia. Playa San Francisco adjoins the harbour and, with its two bays, has enough space for several chiringuitos offering meals, drinks and sun loungers. At the same time, the beach is very compact. Anyone who enjoys a close-up view of the yachts coming and going, or who is staying in the holiday apartments and hotels along the promenade behind the beach, will appreciate the good bathing conditions and the fine sand.
Playa San Francisco - double bay with a surface of fine sand, right by the harbour
Playa San Francisco is a Spanish beach on the Andalusian coast of the Mediterranean, in the town of Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol, to be precise. It is bordered to the south-west by the harbour at Fuengirola, while to the north-east it is divided from the neighbouring beach of Playa Los Boliches by a stream which empties into the sea here. In the dry summer months, however, the two beaches are usually seamlessly linked.
It is backed by a road with a promenade running alongside the beach. The fine, brownish-grey sand is divided into two bays by a breakwater which you can walk along. The harbour wall provides further shelter from the waves. Playa San Francisco gets a good deal wider close to the harbour, but also to the north of the breakwater. Here there are several chiringuitos (beach restaurants) that provide meals, drinks and sun loungers with sun umbrellas. It’s mainly fish that is grilled at the stations set up outside them.
A small water sports operator rents out colourful pedal boats in a variety of shapes, as well as canoes. There are showers and public toilets, and lifeguards take care of safety in the water. There is also a small play area and a few items of fitness equipment.
It's the nearby harbour that has the biggest influence on the scenery at Playa de San Francisco. If you like lying on your beach towel watching the yachts coming and going, you'll be perfectly happy here. On the beach you'll encounter visitors from the hotels and holiday apartments in the large building complexes in the background. But this relatively compact beach is even more popular with the locals.
