Playa de la Barca looks completely different at full moon and at new moon. The large sandy area is transformed into a big lagoon. This dramatic change of scenery makes the beach very special. Furthermore, it is very popular with wind surfers and kite boarders because of the unique wind conditions. The local René Egli Windsurfing Centre hosts the Windsurfing and Kite Boarding World Cup every year.
Playa de la Barca - Kite Boarding and Wind Surfing ParadisePlaya de la Barca is the northern part of the large Sotavento beach, which is situated approximately 15 minutes south of Costa Calma. As is the case at the Risco del Paso beach, there is a lagoon area which at high tide is covered in shallow water. This phenomenon is dependent on the tides and therefore the moon. Green shrubs and palm trees round off the picturesque setting. The El Paso mountain rises in the background of Playa de la Barca.
The unique wind conditions at Playa de la Barca make this beach a very popular place for watersport enthusiasts. Every year in summer the Windsurfing and Kite Boarding World Cup takes place here. If you would like to have a go at windsurfing and kite boarding yourself, you can hire equipment and book a lesson at the famous Kite Boarding and Windsurfing School at Playa de la Barca which has been at the beach for more than 30 years. There are facilities at the centre as well as sun-loungers for hire and snacks and drinks on offer. Stand up paddle and beach sailing are also possible at Playa de la Barca.
For safety reasons the beach is divided into three zones: swimming, kite boarding and windsurfing.
