Summary of the Beach Inspectors

Around Playa de las Meloneras in the south of Gran Canaria you'll find the island's most beautiful, but also most bustling beaches. The long, light sandy beach is well-kept and visitors with high standards in particular will enjoy spending time on this excellent beach, which has the 'Blue Flag' seal of approval. Compared to its neighbours, Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés, Meloneras is probably the quietest and most down to earth beach, and yet at the same time it offers all the amenities of developed tourist beaches.

Playa de las Meloneras - The more peaceful alternative in the south of Gran Canaria

Around Playa de las Meloneras in the south of Gran Canaria you'll find the island's most beautiful, but also most bustling beaches. Compared to its neighbours, Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés, Meloneras is probably the quietest and most down to earth beach, and yet at the same time it offers all the amenities of developed tourist beaches.

As a truly popular beach, Playa de las Meloneras is well signposted and easy to find. Finding a parking space here, even in low season, is more difficult. It's best to arrive early in the morning or be prepared for a long walk. Alternatively you can get here along the coast on one of the buses, which saves you the hassle of parking.

Architecturally the streets, buildings and parks here on the southern tip of Gran Canaria are actually a little reminiscent of the boulevards of Beverly Hills or Palm Springs. Generous, broad, palm avenues are lined with modern resort buildings and shopping centres and the properties and driveways are clean and well-kept. The approach to Playa de las Meloneras puts you in the right mood straight away because the lush, green golf course on your right forms a beautiful contrast to the light, artificial sandy beach and the deep blue Atlantic Ocean.

To get to the beach you either come straight along the path, catching your first few rays of sun on the way, or you can stop for a browse in a little shopping centre that joins right up to the beach promenade. A variety of bars and small shops await on the four floors, which are connected by stairs and an elevator. You can also use the very clean toilets here, although there are modern toilets right on the beach as well.

Playa de las Meloneras itself offers a fantastic, wide beach promenade with small shops and is easily accessible for unaccompanied wheelchair users via a low ramp. The long, light sandy beach is well-kept and visitors with high standards in particular will enjoy spending time on this excellent beach, which has the 'Blue Flag' seal of approval. It slopes gently into the water and in the middle you'll have no problem going in even without beach shoes. Appropriate footwear is advisable at the stonier edges though. There are fewer children on the beach here. Playa de las Meloneras is more a beach for those looking for tranquillity, who don't want to sacrifice the luxury of good restaurants and well thought out infrastructure. For a little snack we recommend the 'Hemingway' beach bar and for the most discerning palates, the fine, high-quality cuisine at 'CiaoCiao', which you're sure to remember for years to come.
