Playa Hoya del Pozo - Where you'll always find a shady spot!Anyone for whom the pulsing life in the south of Gran Canaria or the bustle of Las Palmas finally gets too much would be well advised to investigate the beaches on the east coast. There is a fantastic stretch of coastline less than quarter of an hour south-east of Las Palmas where you will find beaches for sunbathing, relaxing and even surfing! The three beaches Playa del Hombre, Playa Hoya del Pozo and Playa de la Garita are linked by a well-kept promenade lined with palm trees, and you can simply switch from one beach to the other all afternoon.
Out of the three, the best place to aim for initially is the small, peaceful beach of Hoya del Pozo, as it has a large official car park where you can even park a camper van. The little bay is great for bathing and is an especially good place to spend an afternoon with children. Playa de la Garita is equipped with a smooth ramp, so that you can easily get down to the beach from the large car park, either with a pushchair or a wheelchair. There are plenty of shady spots as well, which means you can happily leave your sun umbrella at home. On top of that you will find showers and toilets at the beach, and in peak season lifeguards will keep a watchful eye on the younger generation. The littlest ones can let off steam either in the water or at a playground up on the promenade.
Between Playa Hoya del Pozo and the surfing beach of Playa del Hombre there is also a small restaurant called Perico Junior. Here you can order not only fish dishes and Canary Islands specialities, but also meat dishes, baguettes and salads, all at prices typical for the region, while enjoying the fresh sea breezes!
