Summary of the Beach Inspectors

Monkey Beach - the name says it all. Monkeys live at this beach and entertain the enthusiastic holidaymakers right in front of their eyes. You are not allowed to feed the animals and it is not recommended to touch them, but you can certainly take photos. If you stick to these rules, then you can add some really nice snapshots and videos to your holiday photo collection. However, even without the tame primates, Monkey Beach is a beach of Koh Phi Phi which is to be recommended. The water, the sand and the coast are top quality and the underwater world here is also very colourful.

Monkey Beach - Wonderful natural bay, well-known for its inhabitants

Also known as Yong Gasem Bay, Monkey Beach on Koh Phi Phi is only a few hundred metres from the busy centre of the island, but you cannot get here on foot. You can come to the beach by water-taxi with a motorised long-tail boat, or you can hire a kayak with which you can paddle here in about 20 minutes. Experienced swimmers can also swim over to Monkey Beach, especially at low tide. Many tour providers also include Monkey Beach as part of their day-trips.

At the latest when you arrive at Monkey Beach you will see that there is no doubt where the name comes from, as the beach is full of monkeys. Numerous primates of the macaques’ species live in the forested steep slopes of the hills, but will come to the beach if something attracts their attention, which is usually tourists and the food and drink which they bring with them.

The mischievous monkeys will very skilfully grab anything that looks like food and drink and even valuables hidden away in bags are not safe from them. You might get these back if you can tempt them with something more interesting! The largest of the monkeys can even get quite aggressive if you try to fight them off. The best thing is to leave everything you do not need in the hotel and keep your distance as a monkey bite can transmit harmful diseases.

The primates are certainly not the only attraction at Monkey Beach, as the beach itself is one of the nicest on Koh Phi Phi. The fine, white sand, clear turquoise water and lush greenery on the dark rock cliffs make this natural beach extremely attractive. The underwater world here is also worth seeing and if you go snorkelling you can watch numerous colourful fish, particularly at the edges of Monkey Beach.

If possible, you should visit Monkey Beach at low tide, as at high tide the beach is very narrow and becomes very crowded. The best time to come here is early morning or late afternoon.
