Playa de Abama - Hidden bay with natural pools and a lift
Playa de Abama is situated in the south of Tenerife, about 10 minutes away from San Juan. The beach can be found at the foot of the Ritz Carlton Resort. The dominant hotel buildings with their reddish colour are easily recognisable from a distance. Playa de Abama is the hotel beach, but it is not only for the exclusive use of its guests, which is good as it would be a shame if this gem of a beach wasn't open to everyone.
Unfortunately parking here is somewhat difficult. Even after finding a free parking space, an approximately 10-minute walk to the beach is necessary. Completing this walk is however rewarded by an excellent viewing point, offering a superb view of the hidden bay and its beautiful turquoise water, overlooked by two enormous cliffs. The bay with its lush green vegetation stands out like a mirage under the barren rocky cliffs.
A special feature here is the lift which takes you down to the beach. There are also a small train and golf-buggies for hotel guests, to make access to the beach easier. You can also simply walk down the tarmac road and then take the steps down to the beach. Down at the bay you are welcomed by the very friendly staff of the sun-lounger outlet and restaurant. Hotel guests can use the sun-loungers for free, but you can also rent them for €5.50 to €8.50 for a day. The exclusive restaurant which looks after your food and drink needs belongs to the Ritz Carlton Beach Resort.
A large sunbathing area and crystal clear water are main attractions of this beach. The shallow entry into the water makes the bay appealing to families. The beach is very clean and is protected from the wind by the surrounding cliffs. There are also wave breakers and lifeguards on duty to ensure that swimming here is even safer.
A path leads south along the rocks, where natural pools have formed. The pools have railings to help you to climb in. It is peaceful here, allowing you to unwind and relax.
